Basics and limitations of Cancer Vaccine as a part of Immunotherapy

Cancer vaccine being a part of immuno-oncology shows effective and potential approaches against cancer treatment. Cancer could be a very serious disease and not knowing what to do about it with the demonstration of options that could be wrong for an individual. This is why we’re going to take about one of these immunotherapy’s called cancer vaccines nowadays.

Usually vaccines are reserved as a preventative type of medicine, more like before the person is infected by the disease, the vaccines are given, to enable the immune system to be able to fight the disease off when it comes. This is not the same when it comes to cancer vaccines, mainly its’ given to the patient after he has been infected with cancer and it’s used to boost the immune system to be able to act against the cancerous cells, to be able to imagine it easily.

This form of therapy is actively uses the immune system to target and attack cancerous cells and this made to happen using either cells that are extracted from the patient and then activated, cultured and grown and reintroduced inside the patient to be able to recognize the cancerous cells and begin to attack them or using designed viruses or vectors, that introduce cancer specific proteins that enable the immune system to recognize it and then attack it.

Due to the way this treatment works targeting a specific antigen to work on, when this faces reality, it could become ineffective because the antigens change from one patient to the next. Also same goes to the different types of cancers identified, cancer cells may look the same, but antigen proteins differ, and thus what works on one of them doesn’t need to work on the other.

Finally most of patients are using radiation or chemotherapy which could cause the mutation of these cells to happen and thus the targeted approach would then become ineffective. In recent years, while there is an increase in the cancer researches, the immunotherapy has been shown to be an active area of cancer research.
